CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The 150th anniversary commemoration of the battle involving the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry is continuing in Charleston.
A symposium scheduled for Saturday at the city's Dock Street Theatre will focus on the attack on Confederate Battery Wagner on Morris Island chronicled in the film "Glory."
Authors and historians will discuss the fight and what it meant. The valor of the black troops helped dispel a myth held by many both in the North and South that black troops could not fight. Programs commemorating the anniversary are also scheduled for Fort Moultrie on Sullivans Island.
Thursday was the anniversary of the battle. Saturday's symposium is part of 6 days of events surrounding the 150th anniversary of the fight at Battery Wagner.
