Bond denied to James Island man charged with murder

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A bond court judge could not set bond for 24-year-old Derrick McKinley.

McKinley was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime for the shooting death of 21-year-old Da'Shawn Zellars.

"My son is a good boy. He doesn't bother nobody at all. He works two jobs he has a baby that's two and one on the way," said the victim's mother in bond court Sunday. "He didn't deserve it. He didn't deserve it at all."

The Zellars family left bond court still in shock over their sudden loss.

According to court documents, McKinley and Zellars were fixing a tire on a vehicle outside a house on Ferarra Drive in North Charleston when a fight broke out. The affidavit also says the argument escalated to a physical fight.

Zellars escaped the fight and went home, documents show. He told his family what happened; that's when a family member went to get a gun.

The victim and a family member went back outside and saw McKinley driving his car towards them. Court documents say when Zellars realized McKinley was coming to his house, he took the gun from his family member and held it at his side.

When McKinley exited his car, the two men started arguing again. That's when McKinley fired several shots at Zellars.

Zellars was taken to Medical University Hospital where he later died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
