Save three lives by donating blood Thursday

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Every year the summer season creates a shortage in blood supplies for the American Red Cross, but the need for blood doesn't go away.

"Every two seconds somebody in the United States needs a blood transfusion," said Red Cross spokesperson Barbie Schreiner.  "So if you put that in the parameter of one day, that's a lot of blood that's consumed in the United States, so there is a constant need."

On Thursday, Red Cross volunteers are collecting blood donations at both the Citadel and Northwoods malls.

In addition to saving three lives by donating, everyone who participates will also be given two tickets to see the Charleston Riverdogs play, a box of Girl Scout cookies and a Red Cross ball cap.

To donate you must be at least 17 years old, or 16 if you are accompanied by a parent.  You must also have a picture ID.

The blood drive started at 8 a.m. and will run until 8 p.m.
