Stolen beach bag containing urn returned to family

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A Spartanburg woman is able to scatter her father's ashes as planned after someone returned a stolen beach bag with his urn inside.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reports ( ) the bag contained the ashes of Jim Burnett, who died March 13. His daughter, Leighann Webb, says her family planned to scatter his ashes on the beach and in the ocean.

But someone took the bag after Webb set it down briefly outside her rented villa Thursday. Webb says she "went crazy because my car keys and my dad were in there."

She contacted authorities and spent hours going through garbage cans.

After she had her vehicle towed Friday to be rekeyed, someone knocked on the door and returned the bag, with the urn and keys inside.
