Sea turtle returns to island where she was rescued

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - DNA testing reveals that the largest sea turtle ever treated at the South Carolina Aquarium has returned to the island where she was rescued to lay at least two nests this year.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Saturday (http://bit.ly/15TK17W ) that DNA pulled from egg shells shows that the loggerhead sea turtle named Big Mama Pritchard has returned to Pritchards Island near Beaufort.

Kelly Thorvalson of the aquarium's rescue program calls Big Mama a poster child for the species' resiliency.

Volunteers rescued the 350-pound turtle in 2008, after she attempted several times to scramble up the remote beach. She was too weak from wounds in her shell caused by a boat propeller. She returned to the sea in 2010.

Big Mama was first tagged on Pritchards Island in 2002.
