US gas prices up 8 cents over past 2 weeks

CAMARILLO, Calif. (WCIV/AP) - The average U.S. price of a gallon of gasoline has jumped 8 cents over the past two weeks.

The Lundberg Survey of fuel prices released Sunday says the price of a gallon of regular is $3.67. Midgrade costs an average of $3.85 a gallon, and premium is $3.99.

Diesel was up 4 cents at $3.93 gallon.

According to the gas price tracking website GasBuddy.com, prices across the state averaged $3.29 per gallon, which is 2 cents below the average one week ago. Nationally, the average price per gallon is $3.65.

"After an impressive run that saw the national average begin to approach its springtime high, it appears prices have plateaued- at least for now," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.

Of the cities surveyed in the Lower 48 states, Charleston, S.C., has the nation's lowest average price for gas at $3.34. Chicago has the highest at $4.10.

In California, the lowest average price was $3.83 in Sacramento. The highest was in Los Angeles at $4.04. The average statewide for a gallon of regular was $3.97, an increase of 2 cents.

"Oil prices appear to be taking a breather, but with the peak of hurricane season approaching, an continued upward trajectory in gasoline prices is certainly possible, should we see a major storm take aim for the Gulf.  Crude inventories have also declined four consecutive weeks, and large decreases in crude inventories in the near future may be cause for rising oil prices as well," DeHaan said.
