NTSB: 1 dead in Georgetown plane crash

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person is dead after a decommissioned military aircraft crashed in Georgetown County early Monday afternoon.

The NTSB confirmed that one person died in the crash. The coroner's office identified the victim as 79-year-old John Prince Harris, of Charleston, W.V.

The area is relatively small. It simply came in and went into the ground. The area is probably 50 yards by 50 yards," said one official.

Officials said Prince's wife is in the Lowcountry, but his children are still in West Virginia. He was reportedly on his way to visit his wife and friends.

When officials made it to the plane, they said it was on fire and took a few hours to extinguish before investigators could start inspecting the wreckage.

The federal agency identified the plane as a Folland Gnat T-1, a British subsonic jet trainer and fighter aircraft introduced in the 1950s.

Officials with the FAA confirm a plane, described by witnesses as a war replica aircraft, crashed in a wooded area under unknown circumstances after departing the George County Airport in Georgetown around 1:19 p.m. Monday.

Officials with the FAA and NTSB are expected to arrive at the crash site as early as Monday night. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday at Medical University Hospital.
