NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston County Sheriff's deputies were called out to Charlie O's on Dorchester Road for reports of a man with a gun in the parking lot.

Deputies arrived around 4 a.m. Sunday and found that the security guards for the club had already confiscated the Smith and Wesson .40 caliber gun from 23-year-old Jaton Lamont Edwards.

The guards told deputies that they saw Edwards in a Chrysler 300 with the gun, approached him and that's when he pointed the gun at them.

One of the guards pulled a gun of his own, ordered Edwards to drop his gun and he complied. He was arrested and charged with Pointing and Presenting a Firearm and Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm in an ABC Establishment.

Since the guard had a permit to carry from the State Law Enforcement Division, he was not charged.

Edwards told deputies he brought a gun with him to the club because he heard about shootings on the interstate. He also reportedly told police that he's a convicted felon and should not even have a gun but he "really liked to party" and felt he needed protection to get home safely.

He was given bond totaling $100,000.
