COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Students learning centers in nine South Carolina counties are receiving a combined $1.7 million this year to help students outside of school hours.

The state Education Department says 11 organizations have won 21st Century Community Learning Centers grants. They include eight school districts and three nonprofits.

Recipients can each receive up to $200,000 annually. The federally funded grants can be renewed for up to four years.

The money will help provide academic activities to students before and after school during the school year, as well as during the summer.

This year, amounts range from $83,300 awarded to the nonprofit Communities in Schools of Greenville to $200,000 awarded to Greenwood 50.

Other winning school districts were Anderson 2, Charleston County, Dorchester 4, Greenville County, Horry County, Richland 2 and Pickens County.
