HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A countywide ban on texting while driving is a step closer to reality in Beaufort County.
The Island Packet reports a county council committee has sent to the full council a law that would ban motorists from reading or making text messages while driving.
It would apply in unincorporated sections of the county. Council members say they do not want to wait for the General Assembly to act on a statewide ban. Legislators have defeated various proposals on drivers' cell phone use for years.
The Beaufort County proposal is similar to a texting ban adopted several weeks ago by Hilton Head Island.
The city of Beaufort last fall banned drivers who are younger than 18 from using cell phones while driving in the city limits.
