CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – A school supply drive is being held to help support the 2013 First Day Festival.

Charleston's annual First Day Festival will take place on Sunday, August 18 at Liberty Square near the SC Aquarium and Charleston Maritime Center.

The entire community is invited to celebrate education and to mark the beginning of the school year. Attendees will find education exhibitors, health and wellness stations and nutritious snacks.

A key component of the First Day Festival is school supply distribution. Last year, organizers packed more than 6,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for local children who could otherwise begin the school year without the necessary, needed supplies.

The following supplies are still needed for the big day.

  • Pencils and colored pencils
  • 12" rulers
  • Pens
  • Wide-ruled filler paper and composition books
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Tissues (travel/pocket size)
  • Two-pocket folders
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Erasers
  • Crayons
  • Glue

If you'd like to donate, First Day Festival collection bins are located all over Charleston.

"Without the support from the local community, many children would begin the school year without supplies essential to their learning, such as pencils and paper," said First Day Festival Event Coordinator Amy Schlepphorst. "This weekend, school supplies can be purchased tax-free, so we encourage people to pick up some extra supplies to donate to our children in need."

Volunteers are also needed to sort school supplies, pack the backpacks and hand out the backpacks.

Those interested in volunteering should contact the Mayor's Office for Children, Youth and Families by phone (843) 965-4190 or email schlepphorsta@charleston-sc.gov.
