RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) — A month ago, a Ridgeville couple nearly died after Dorchester County deputies say two bank robbers crashed into their car while fleeing from North Charleston police.

Their recovery since the accident has been nothing short of a miracle.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Medical University Hospital confirmed Lois Campbell has been discharged from the hospital. Her husband, Julius, is now listed in good condition. Both initially came to the hospital in critical condition.

This Friday, Beech Hill Elementary will put on a carnival dedicated to the Campbells.

"It'll be an enormous carnival — very much a festival atmosphere all in honor of Lois and Julius," said Angie Grant, the PTA vice president. "There will be jump castles. There will be games, food, and music."

Lois Campbell has worked as a custodian at the school for more than 20 years.

"Lois is a gem. There's nobody like her," said Grant. "My dad was diagnosed a couple of years ago with an illness, and she has been the one here consistently still every week coming to me and hugging me, asking ‘How's your dad? I'm praying for him.'"

On Wednesday, her co-workers spent the evening gathering boxes of food and other goodies for the big event.

"She is getting to see how many people absolutely love her," said Kara Muller, a physical education teacher at the school. "She just has the best attitude, the best smile, the best hugs. She can just make you laugh -- no matter how you feel during the day."

This Friday's carnival will help the couple pay for their mounting medical bills, so organizers are hoping for a tremendous turnout.

"We're family and everybody rallies around whoever is in need, and right now it's Lois," said Grant. "The community has just stepped up to the plate. We have got tables full of beautiful gift baskets, gift certificates from local businesses to auction off."

While the halls of the school have been empty without Lois Campbell; her fellow custodians eagerly await her return to work.

"We love you! We miss you! Get well soon! You need to come back to work!" they said.

The carnival is slated for Aug. 2 at 4 p.m. and will run until 8 p.m. Activities will include face painting, silent auctions, cake walks, pony rides and much more. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
