CFD: Streets reopened after gas leak cleared downtown

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charleston Fire Department officials say a gas leak shut down several streets on the peninsula.

According to a CFD spokesperson, around 11 a.m., crews working near 532 King Street reported a possible natural gas leak or odor.

CFD and Charleston Police responded to the area and closed King Street between Mary and Cannon streets.

Fire Chief Mike Julazadeh said the adjacent buildings were also evacuated as a safety precaution.

UPDATE from CFD: SCE&G crews have secured the scene at King and Woolfe streets. CFD units have cleared the scene and all routes are open as of 12:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, said Julazadeh. He also said while contractors will continue to work in the area, King St. will be open for traffic.
