Deputies: Man kills woman who was helping him

Posted: Updated:

PRITCHARDVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County deputies say a 41-year-old man killed a woman who helped him when he was having a rough time finding a place to live.

Investigators said Walter Glass hit 60-year-old Melanie Lowther in the head with a metal bar Wednesday morning after she caught him trying to break into her business in Pritchardville.

Deputies say Glass was arrested a few hours after Lowther's body was found at the septic tank service her family owned.

Sheriff P.J. Tanner says Lowther helped find Glass a camper to live in when he was down on his luck. The sheriff says Lowther was always helping someone.

Glass remains in jail without bond. It wasn't known if he had a lawyer.
