Lowcountry prosecutor suspends mob law probe

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A Lowcountry prosecutor says a tight budget has forced his office to suspend a so-called mob law investigation on St. Helena Island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone has suspended the effort that allows witnesses to be subpoenaed before a suspect has been indicted for a crime.

It's been credited with helping gather evidence stemming from a shooting outside a St. Helena nightclub in June of last year. Two people were killed and two injured in front of about 50 people.

The investigation has led to the arrests of 3 people. The probe was headed by a senior prosecutor who has since gone into private law practice. Stone says the program's suspension won't affect the prosecution of those already arrested.
