CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Detectives with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office arrested a 71-year-old woman after they got a tip from another woman who claimed her grandfather had been murdered back in the 1990s.

Based on investigations that stemmed from that tip, deputies learned that David Shand, the husband of Phyllis Shand, was murdered.

Phyllis Shand was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice.

Shand's granddaughter told detectives her grandfather was murdered by his son, Jason Shand, inside of his Johns Island home, according to the affidavit.

The woman told police that David Shand, her uncle, died in 2005 from a single-vehicle accident.

Officials said detectives reached out to Phyllis Shand and she told them her husband left four or five years ago and she had not heard from him since.

According to investigators, Phyllis Shand lied to family and friends about David Shand's death telling them he died in a Veteran's Hospital in Florida in the early 1990s.

Upon further investigation, detectives found the obituary for Jason Shand, which said he was the son of Phyllis Shand and the late David Shand, referencing that his father was dead.

On June 14, detectives obtained a search warrant for the Johns Island home and Phyllis Shand agreed to an interview.

According to the affidavit, Phyllis Shand told detectives sometime in the early 1990s, her husband held her at gunpoint for three days in their bedroom. She said her son tried to get his father to let her out of the bedroom and the father and son began to argue.

David Shand left the bedroom with the gun to confront his son, she told detectives. She said she heard them fighting and gunshots being fired. Her son told her to stay in the bedroom and not come out and 20 minutes later, David Shand was gone, she told detectives.

She told detectives that her son said, "You won't see him again. He's gone."

David Shand's body has not been found.
