Practice begins for prep football

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- High school football is back. Friday marked the first day that teams could hit the field for their first official practices.

With high school football comes questions, however. Can Bishop England win a third straight state title? Will Goose Creek be able to bounce back following last year's battle with the high school league? And how will Class A state champs Cross High School react following the sudden death of 34-year-old assistant coach Antonio Simmons just a few weeks ago?

And then there's 86-year-old coaching legend John McKissick back on the practice field early Friday morning at the start of his 62nd season as Summerville's head coach. After 601 victories and 10 state titles, the first day of practice is still an exciting time, he says.

"I look forward to being around the coaches; I look forward to being around the young people," said McKissick.

At Stratford High School, head coach Ray Stackley, another veteran head coach who circles this date on the calendar after the final snap of the previous season. At 63 years old he's just a baby compared to McKissick, but he's more than ready to get things started this season.

"There's a lot of technical, fundamental work, but we're real excited about it," Stackley said.
