Community rallies behind couple seriously injured in car accident

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A community gathered for a carnival Friday night to raise money for a couple that was seriously injured in a car accident last month.

The carnival was held at Beech Hills Elementary, where Lois Campbell has worked as a custodian for the last 20 years.

Students, teachers and other members of the community worked to raise money for the medical bills Lois Campbell and her husband Julius Campbell have to pay.

Lois Campbell made a unexpected visit at the carnival and was greeted with hugs and smiles.

"Oh my God - it drives my heart," she said. "I'm overwhelmed. I love everyone very much. All my babies, all the teachers, parents, grandparents - everybody."

The couple was seriously injured after two bank robbers crashed into their car.

After the crash, both were listed in critical condition. Lois Campbell was thrown from the car. She was released from the hospital a few days ago.

"It's like a blessing," said David Simmons, one of Lois Campbell's co-workers. "It's like a blessing because she was in critical condition and we didn't know if she was going to make it or not. And now she's here."

Her husband is still in the hospital but Lois Campbell said he is doing better.

"I call. I fuss at him and I get on him. I say, 'You've got to listen. Be obedient and do whatever the doctors say and you'll be able to come home," she said.

"I miss him so much," she added. "It was hard to leave him behind because we're always together. We're never apart."

Lois Campbell is not sure when she'll return start working again but her co-workers hope she comes back soon.
