Augusta completes sweep of RiverDogs on walkoff error

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, GA (DOGS) – In one of the strangest final innings of a ballgame you will ever see, the Augusta GreenJackets swept the Charleston RiverDogs out of town with a 6-5 walk-off victory at Lake Olmstead Stadium in South Atlantic League action on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the RiverDogs drop to 22-21 in the second half and 61-50 overall. It's Charleston's sixth loss in the past four days. With the win, Augusta completes a six game sweep of the RiverDogs and improves to 24-18 in the second half and 62-49 overall.

The Augusta GreenJackets struck early Sunday afternoon. The GreenJackets plated two runs in the bottom of the first on two walks, a hit batsman, a ground out and a wild pitch.

Augusta scored their third run of the game on a solo blast from Mitchell Delfino to lead off the bottom of the third. For Delfino, it was his tenth homer of the season. He finished 2-for-2 with a single, homer and two walks.

Augusta's fourth run came across in the bottom of the fourth when Shawn Payne doubled in Alberto Robles who walked earlier in the inning. The GreenJackets added a fifth run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Andrew Cain which scored Chuckie Jones.

GreenJackets starter Matthew Lujan continued his excellence in the SAL with a solid start going 6.2 innings that saw him allow a run on four hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.

Jacob Dunnington came in to close out the game in the top of the ninth for Augusta but after getting two quick outs, he allowed a double and a walk before he was yanked from the game by manager Mike Goff. With lefty Greg Bird stepping to the plate, Augusta went to the bullpen and called upon lefty Steven Okert who allowed a four pitch walk to Bird. Okert then was relieved by right-hander Ian Gardeck to face righty Angelo Gumbs. Gardeck threw two wild pitches scoring both Jake Cave and Cito Culver and eventually walked Gumbs. With Gumbs and Bird at the corners, Augusta decided to bring in their fourth pitcher of the inning in the form of Edward Concepcion (1-0). It was just his second appearance this year with the GreenJackets and he walked Danny Oh on four straight pitches to load the bases with two outs. Concepcion then tossed an errant pitch to the backstop scoring Greg Bird from third to tie the game at five in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Augusta went right out and won the game. Reliever Adam Smith allowed a single to start the ninth to Shawn Payne. He then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Nick McCoy to send Augusta to the 6-5 win.

Charleston's first run of the game came across in the top of the sixth inning when Greg Bird began things with a double. Bird scored later on a two out single by Ericson Leonora.

Leonora was back at it in the top of the eighth inning when he singled in Angelo Gumbs for the second run of the afternoon for the RiverDogs. Leonora finished 2-for-5 with two singles and two RBI's. Jake Cave was the only other RiverDog to finish with multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles giving him 29 doubles now on the season.

Charleston starter Evan Rutckyj lasted just five innings and allowed four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Rutckyj was a bit wild Sunday and came just a walk shy of tying his season high of six walks in one game. Adam Smith (4-2) took the loss as he went 1 inning and allowed one run.

RiverDogs manager Al Pedrique was tossed in the fifth inning after arguing a double play called by the bases umpire.

Charleston stays on the road for three more games as they travel south to take on the Savannah Sand Gnats at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Georgia starting Monday night. Starters for both Charleston and Savannah are TBD for Monday's series opener. You can listen to each and every game live locally on ESPN 910 AM or online at www.riverdogs.com.
