Lucy Li making history at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- When Lucy Li steps to the first tee at Country Club of Charleston Monday morning she will be 10 years, 10 months and 4 days of age.

The little girl from Redwood Shores, Calif., will be the youngest player ever to compete in the history of the United States Women's Amateur Championship.

"It's really exciting. It's a lot of fun; it's pretty cool," said Li, who first started playing golf less than three years ago.

She can hit a ball 210 yards off the tee, but says she can hit it even further when she's playing in tournaments -- bad news for the rest of the field where the average age is 19.5 years old.

"I just practice my long game, do some putting and chipping and then go out on the course," said Li in a shy, matter-of-fact sort of way. "I hit it straight and my short game is pretty good too."

She is very much a 10-year-old in so many ways -- a youthful innocence and hardy giggle. She likes bright colors, on this day wearing a rainbow top, red hat, and yellow skirt. The look in her eye says, "What's the big deal? This game is fun!"

So how does the kid from California breakdown the 6,488-yard Country Club of Charleston course?

"The course is really straight forward, the greens are really elevated, and the course is really long."

Spoken like a pro well beyond her years.
