SCE&G showing off nuclear plant construction

Posted: Updated:

JENKINSVILLE, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. is allowing media to tour the construction site of its new nuclear plants in Fairfield County.

The utility is hosting media Wednesday at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville.

SCE&G is building two new reactors at the site, to be jointly owned with state-owned utility Santee Cooper. The first reactor is scheduled to open in 2017.

Crews poured a 6-foot-thick concrete foundation for the plant in March. The utility said it took more than 51 hours to pour 7,000 cubic yards of concrete.

The reactors are the first to be built in South Carolina in more than 25 years. Once both are complete, the state will have nine operating nuclear plants.

V.C. Summer has one nuclear reactor that began operating three decades ago.
