CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A concert benefiting veterans is coming to Charleston this September after being in Beaufort the past three years.

The Lieutenant Dan Band will be playing a benefit concert at the Citadel on September 14th. It will be free for wounded veterans along with their caretakers. The he general public must purchase tickets for the event.

Gary Sinise, also known as Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump, formed a band with several other musicians and now travels around the world playing charity benefits to raise money for veterans.

"They love what they do, they love playing for the military, they love playing for the veterans," said Janice Byrouty who does marketing for Independence Fund.

This local concert is put together by Independence Fund, an organization run solely by volunteers. Janice Byrouty got involved after attending the concert last year.

"As I saw the wives and the girlfriends and the parents and the husbands pushing their significant others towards the stage, I saw them cry and it was so emotional that I immediately decided that I wanted to volunteer," she said. "I wanted to do whatever I could to help."

All of the money raised goes to the veterans and the group is hoping to fill Johnson Hagood Stadium.

"Charleston is a very military-based town. We have the Citadel here. We have the naval weapons station and the air force base and we are hoping that everyone comes out to support the veterans," Byrouty said.

Because more support for the veterans means more money for their cause.

"It lets them know that they are not forgotten," she said. "It lets them know that the community stands behind them and appreciates everything they have done and everything they have sacrificed."

There will also be a 5K race and 15K bike ride the morning of the event.

General admission tickets are $20 dollars and $50 for VIP seating.
