BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Berkeley County detention center officer was arrested by state agents Tuesday and accused of striking a restrained inmate.

According to the State Law Enforcement Division, 49-year-old Billy Wade Biering was charged with one count of third-degree assault and battery.

The charge is a misdemeanor and carries with it a maximum penalty of 30 days in jail and a $500 fine, if he's convicted.

According to the arrest warrant, the assault happened in May of 2012. Biering allegedly hit the inmate repeatedly with a closed fist.

Biering is being held at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center.

SLED's investigation was triggered at the request of the sheriff's office, officials said.
