COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State Rep. Mike Anthony of Union says he wants to lead South Carolina's public schools.

The retired teacher and coach is announcing Thursday that he's running for the Democratic nomination for state education superintendent. He could face Republican Superintendent Mick Zais next year.

Anthony kicked off his three-stop tour in Union, which he has represented in the House for a decade. He also was head football coach and athletic director for Union High School. During his tenure, the Yellow Jackets won three state football championships.

Anthony is scheduled to speak later Thursday in Columbia and North Charleston.

Zais is seeking a second term, but he declined Thursday to discuss a potential opponent. He says he's focusing on his job as state schools chief, not campaigning.
