Henderson showing 'hop' on field for Chanticleers

Posted: Updated:

CONWAY, S.C. (WCIV) -- At Summerville High School, Deangelo Henderson was a top player in the state of South Carolina.

He was a Mr. Football finalist and a sure-fire college prospect, but some grades and credit transfers prolonged his journey to Coastal Carolina. Three years later, he's finally set to see game action for the Chanticleers.

For most, two-a-days are the dark days of summer. For Henderson, this is the light at the end of the tunnel.

"It's a blessing, my story; my process of getting here is overwhelming. Knowing I'm finally able to play, I'm thankful, I thank the Lord. I'm grateful," said Henderson.

A year off the team, a year on a scout team, and finally, he's a member of the first team.

"The wait process was tough, I was really down. I wasn't sure if I'd get the opportunity with the new staff. This year came along and they said positive stuff was going to happen," he said.

In Conway, Henderson is no longer known as Deangelo. He's known as "Hop."

"It's his running style," said Coastal Carolina second-year head coach Joe Moglia. "It's his ability to stop and go, stop and go. We call that hop. Early on, I called him Deangelo. He told me, 'Coach, I'm Hop.' I don't even know him as Deangelo, I know him as Hop."

Good thing he's done nothing but hop up the depth chart. He's now hoping to hop into the end zone just like he did at McKissick Field.

"I'm trying to be better than that. I'm working every day to be the best I can be. I want to be the best. As far as the team goes, personal records are important, but at the same time we aspire to win a national championship," said Henderson.

"He has an incredible ability to run the ball. I have no doubt he'll continue to improve and no doubt he'll have good production this year. He'll get better as time goes on," said Moglia.

As history shows, Deangelo Henderson won't quit until he gets what he wants.
