Berkeley deputies to increase presence around schools on first day

Posted: Updated:

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- As students and parents head back to the classroom in Berkeley County, they might see more deputies than normal on the first day.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Office officials announced Saturday that deputies would be positioned in high-traffic areas to help with increased traffic during the first day of school.

According to the statement, Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said deputies would be out "to help create a smooth and safe transition for all returning to school." Officials said a study shows the need to greater traffic control.

Officials said deputies would be patrolling the following schools to monitor traffic flow and help people trying to get into and out of the school: Cross Elementary, Cross High, Whitesville Elementary, Sedgefield Elementary, Sangaree Elementary, Berkeley Elementary, Macedonia Middle, H.E. Bonner Elementary, and College Park Elementary.
