Troopers arrest Maine woman accused of abducting 2 children

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- State Highway Patrol officers arrested a Maine woman believed to have abducted two small children.

According to Trooper Bridget Wyant, Troopers arrested Bethmarie Retamozzo, the mother of a 7-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy whom she does not have legal custody, after finding her van parked at a southbound rest area on Interstate 95.

The two children, who had been abducted from their grandparents' home, were found unharmed.

According to a release from the Waterville, Maine, Police Department, Retamozzo abducted the two children around 8:45 p.m. Thursday after seeing the children earlier in the day during a supervised visit.

Retamozzo and her children were supposed to meet with the grandparents at a pre-arranged location, but she did not show up, police said. Maine police then obtained an arrest warrant for Retamozzo, charging her with two county of criminal restraint by parent.

Police in Maine believed Retamozzo was heading to Florida and said the two children could be in danger, but did not release further details about the threat the children were facing.

Retamozzo was booked into the Colleton County Detention Center and charged as a fugitive of justice. Wyant said a hold would be placed on her until federal authorities take her into custody.

The children will be placed into the care of the Colleton County Department of Social Services, Wyant said.
