Coast Guard drains fuel from grounded shrimp boats

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Coast Guard has hired a company to drain the 1,300 gallons of fuel aboard two shrimp boats that ran aground north of Hilton Head Island.

The Coast Guard says the fuel removal began after a sheen was seen on the water near the boats. They ran aground last week as one boat was towing the other. An investigation showed that the fuel tank in 1 of the boats was damaged.

The Coast Guard says a Savannah, Ga., company has been hired to remove the fuel. There's no timetable for removing the vessels. The Coast Guard is also investigating the grounding.
