MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- Cypress Gardens is a Lowcountry gem that attracts visitors from all over the world.

Visitors can tour the property by foot or by boat. The gardens have been featured in films such as "The Notebook" and "The Patriot."

Kathy Woolsey has worked at Cypress Gardens since Berkeley County bought it from the city of Charleston 17 years ago for $1. She said she'd seen it all, including Mel Gibson in "The Patriot."

"'The Patriot' had a lot of horses on set. They were always chewing on my camellias and azaleas. That was aggravating but you know, if Mel Gibson's horse wants to chew on your azalea, let him do it," she said.

She also remembered the shooting of the lake scenes in "The Notebook" in 2002.

"We have people coming that want to get married here because of 'The Notebook.' They want to know where the scenes were shot and all that. We've had people propose here because of [it]," Woolsey said.

But Cypress Gardens weren't only known for the water lilies and pristine swamp reflections. The attraction actually had its own aquarium and butterfly house. And the grounds had history, too.

"Dean Hall was a prosperous rice plantation from 1750 to the Civil War," she said.

The on-site museum had relics from the plantation period and featured the largest archaeological find of slave-made pottery in the U.S.

"For parents, if you've got children studying South Carolina history, this is a wonderful place to bring them," Woolsey said.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and includes a boat tour. The guided boat tour costs an extra $5.

ABCNews4 will be live in Moncks Corner on Thursday, Aug. 22 as part of the Your Neighbors series. Join Dean Stephen and Victoria Hansen atMusic Man BBQ for a meet-up at 4 p.m. followed by live broadcasts from the train depot at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
