Parents gather to discuss new school option in Berkeley

Posted: Updated:

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- Parents in one Berkeley County community gathered Tuesday night to talk about ways to ease the overcrowding problem at some schools.

A proposal for a new school in the Tanner Plantation Foster Creek Road area is on the table at the meeting held at the Shield of Faith Church in Hanahan.

The meeting gave parents an opportunity to learn more about the school building plans and see a map of a second potential school location.

A district spokesperson says the new elementary school will help alleviate overcrowding at three Berkeley County schools, including Goose Creek Primary, Hanahan Elementary, and Sedgefield Intermediate School.

The new school is scheduled to open for the 2015-16 school year. However, the actual location of the new school has still yet to be determined. That's why the school district is holding a number of public meetings to get feedback from the community.

District leaders have also been in negotiations with the Charleston Commission of Public Works regarding a location option bordering the reservoir.

The new school is made possible through a school referendum voters passed in November 2012.
