Summer's over for CCSD students back at school

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – Summer vacation is over and the first day of school for Charleston County is finally here. Charleston County School District [CCSD] is the second largest school system in the state of South Carolina.

CCSD serves more than 46,000 students in 84 schools and several specialized programs. With approximately 5,5000 employees district-wide, CCSD is the fourth largest employer in the region.

This school year, Charleston County will have three newly renovated schools in Buist Academy, Charleston Progressive, and Memminger.

James Simons Elementary was meant to open at the start of the school year but officials say construction was held up by the heavy rain. The school is now set to open in October.

CCSD Superintendent Dr. Nancy McGinley released a recorded message for the first day of school in which she said in part:

"I'm beginning my seventh year as your Superintendent. I could not be more proud of what we have accomplished together and the direction in which we are headed. The talent across our district truly amazes me. Together we will close the achievement gap and steer every student across the country into the path of a bright future."

"New beginnings, new opportunities, and new challenges await all of us this year. But first I want to thank you, and congratulate you, for making academic progress for vision 2016 goals. Your investment in our children's future is paying great dividends. We are among the elite list of recipients for significant federal grants because we are steadily improving. We are seeing those results because what you do day in and day out. The victory is in the classroom."

Until August 23rd, CCSD will have a hotline up and running parents can call for questions. The number is (843) 937-6366 and lines are open Monday-Friday 8 p.m. to 5 p.m.

For all transportation and bus route questions, parents are asked to call the Durham back-to-school hotline at (843) 725-3170.
