The Citadel completes second scrimmage of the preseason

Posted: Updated:

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel football team closed out its second and final team scrimmage on Wednesday night, and its first on the natural grass of Sansom Field at Johnson Hagood Stadium, as the offense, defense and special teams practiced situational, game-style action.

The scrimmage, which consisted of over 100 plays on both sides of the ball, allowed the Bulldog coaches and players to prepare for the 2013 opener against Charleston Southern at Johnson Hagood Stadium next Saturday, Aug. 31. The game is slated for 6 p.m.

Head Coach Kevin Higgins, on tonight's scrimmage:

"We tried to get a feel for how the guys will react and we had some great plays and were able to get some kicking situations in as well, so it was a good night."

B-back Darien Robinson, on the team getting out on the natural grass in full pads:

"It's a good feeling having the freshmen out here and getting them acclimated to everything."

"We have been tearing each other up all camp and it is time to focus on our opponent and we are getting excited for game night."

Linebacker Akeem Garnett, on his three turnovers and the team's attitude:

"As a defensive player you always want to get in the end zone and it feels good to get three turnovers and get hyped up. The attitude is great right now and when everything is clicking it can only get better."

"It always feels good to get under the lights and play on the grass. You try to envision what it's like on game day and do everything like you would and the team has a lot of energy when we get to play in this stadium."
