Mushrooms grown at Mepkin Abbey sold to public

Posted: Updated:

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCIV) -- At the Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, there is a storage house for mushrooms.

The monks grow oyster and shiitake mushrooms that are sold at grocery stores such as Piggly Wiggly and Whole Foods.

"We do that in order to have an integrated lifestyle as far prayer, work and reading," said Brother John. "So we've always tried to stay close to the land and close to the natural environment."

Mepkin Abbey sits on 3,000 acres next to the Cooper River.
