James Island student charged with filing false report

Posted: Updated:

JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A James Island High School student was accused of filing a false police report after telling doctors and officers at Medical University Hospital that he had been shot.

According to an affidavit, Derrontae Holmes told police that when he dropped off his girlfriend at her Ashley River Road home, he saw someone hiding in the shadows. The person fired several shots at Holmes and he ran to his car. When he tried to drive away, he realized that the engine was damaged by the gunfire, he reportedly told officers.

The report states Holmes then called a friend who took him to MUSC for treatment of a gunshot wound to his right toe.

Detectives tasked with investigating the shooting talked to Holmes' girlfriend, who said she heard Holmes drive away after she got out of his car. She said she never heard gunshots.

Police note in the report that there were no calls for service in the area that night.

According to the report, police towed Holmes' vehicle to the crime scene office for processing. That's when officers noted two gunshots through the hood that appeared to come from the front passenger door. The report states that detectives determined the shooter had to be sitting in the front seat or shooting from a position above the car.

A shell casing was found in the back seat of Holmes' car, the report states.

With that information, police were able to determine that Holmes' story did not match the evidence and he was arrested.
