Man returns footstone to Saint Philip's Church

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The man who found a footstone while doing yard work at home on East Bay Street in May said he thinks he has identified the grave where it belongs.

Chris Leigh-Jones said he did some digging and believes it belongs to Sarah Mary Hort, whose headstone is at Saint Philip's Church.

Archaeologists said the evidence is strong enough to connect the footstone with Holt's headstone.

"I come from quite an old land in England and there's lots of ghosts, here in Charleston to," said Leigh-Jones. "I think sometimes they speak to you a little bit. Maybe she saw a chance to get her footstone back and that's where we're gonna put it. We're going to give it back to her."

Hort died in 1843 from tuberculosis. She was born to a wealthy rice planting family in Georgetown.

Leigh-Jones said he plans to return the footstone to Saint Philip's.
