NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A North Charleston woman was charged with cruelty to children after police say she left three children in a running car while she went grocery shopping.

According to a North Charleston police report, 29-year-old Lacy Michelle Nelson was charged with three counts of cruelty to a child. The report states several bystanders called police after spotting the three young children in a car outside the Rivers Avenue Walmart.

Police arrived and determined the children did not appear to be in distress, the report states. Officers noted the car had been left running with the air conditioning on.

Shortly after officers arrived, Nelson appeared from the store with a cart full of groceries, the report states.

According to the report, Nelson said the three children were asleep when she got to the Walmart so she left them there to sleep. She also reportedly told officers that she saw her cousin and asked her to babysit while she was in the store.

Witnesses who called police did not see another adult, however.
