MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) - The value of friendship nowadays is often underestimated, especially when it the relationship involves respect and admiration. Often times children grow up without a figure to look up to, without one they miss out on important life lessons.

The "Be a Mentor" program was created to provide those lessons, and ensure that children of all ages have an opportunity to connect and bond with positive role models. Be a Mentor teaches young people how to build long-lasting community connections, while enhancing the development of character and leadership skills.

The mentoring organization is currently working with 14 different Lowcountry schools,  from pre-Kindergarten kids to teenagers. Volunteers who are screened and qualified can help by simply having lunch with a child or participating in a school activity.

Upcoming events include a spelling bee at The Alley in downtown Charleston on Thursday, Sept. 12. It's free and open to the public. The event is a good way for those interested to get acclimated to the program.

On Wednesday, Be a Mentor will be featured on the ABC News 4 Volunteer Four Phonebank. From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. you can call to get more information or volunteer. The phonebank number is 881-5837.

If you can't call during the phonebank, but still want to help you can always call two other numbers any time of the day. Those numbers are: Dial 2-1-1 or (843) 744-HELP or 1-800-922-2283.
