The Huddle's picks of the week

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Football season is finally here and this year ABC News 4 and the Post and Courier are teaming up to deliver the most high school football coverage in the Lowcountry.

Every Thursday, Sports 4's John Nugent and the Post and Courier's Phil Bowman break down the biggest games each week of the season.

Here's a rundown of the big games this week:

Summerville and Cane Bay (Thursday Night):

For Bowman, this game comes down to keeping an eye on Sawyer Bridges, Summerville's quarterback.  He'll lead Summerville to an easy victory in Week 1, Bowman and Nugent agree. But Nugent points out that Cane Bay snuck out the door with a win last year.

Nugent's score prediction: Summerville, 31-7.

Bowman's score prediction: Summerville, 28-15.

Goose Creek and Ashley Ridge:

"Goose Creek has too much talent. The beat goes on," Bowman said, predicting a win for the Gators.

Nugent also picked Goose Creek to steamroll the team from Ashley Ridge now that Romelo Doctor has moved on.

Nugent's score prediction: Goose Creek, 48-7.

Bowman's score prediction: Goose Creek, 35-13.

Berkeley and Stratford:

Nugent says this game has the potential to get out of hand and Stratford could run the score up quickly. Bowman summed up Stratford's quarterback Jacob Park with three words -- awesome, athletic and accurate.

Nugent's score prediction: Stratford, 42-7.

Bowman's score prediction: Stratford, 24-16.

Bishop England and West Ashley:

Nugent says the Bishops lost 20 seniors to graduation, but still has momentum of years past to squeeze out a win. Bowman says Bishop England needs to find a quarterback, adding that this game in a later week would be all Bishops, but he says West Ashley has the edge in Week 1.

Nugent's score prediction: Bishop England, 14-12.

Bowman's score prediction: West Ashley, 17-10.

Timberland and Hanahan, ABCNews4's Game of the Week:

Bowman says in all the years he's covered high school football, this year's Hanahan team is the most explosive he's ever seen. Nugent says fans should expect a wild ride, but both men agree that Hanahan pulls out the victory.

Nugent's score prediction: Hanahan, 31-21

Bowman's score prediction: Hanahan, 24-14

Wando and Beaufort -- Nugent and Bowman pick Wando to win. Nugent says the final will be 28-14; Bowman says the final will be closer, 20-17.
