Broken Arrow School Officials Punish Athletic Teams, Coaches

Posted: Updated:

Broken Arrow's football and track teams have been placed on "warning" status for the 2013-2014 school year and several coaches and administrators have been suspended or reassigned because both teams played with an ineligible athlete last season.

Superintendent Jarod Mendenhall stated that the student-athlete in question repeated the 8th grade in another district and participated in athletics while repeating the grade. That made him ineligible for his senior year.

School district officials became aware of the possible violation in June and notified the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. Officials also began an internal investigation of district athletic records and processes.

During the press conference school officials stated that Broken Arrow's athletic director will lose duties concerning eligibility and operations. The head football coach will also lose administrative privileges and the current basketball coach, will take over.

Additionally, the district will forfeit two 2012 season football games and five track meets from the 2012-2013 season.
