Charleston adds water taxi at Waterfront Park

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A new water taxi dock will open next month at  the Waterfront Park at Vendue Range and Concord Street at the end of the existing pier.

The new $400,000 dock replaces the one that had to be closed and removed after 9/11 due to security concerns. The new dock was built by Salmon Dredging Co., the city reports.

According to the City of Charleston, the funding for the dock came from online travel companies.

"What a great alternative means of public transportation for our area. Our waterways have historically been used as a means for getting from one place to another.  This transportation service will be valuable to the Market area, the SC Aquarium, Patriots Point, Ft. Sumter Museum and tours, and other downtown locations.  This water taxi dock will offer residents and visitors unique transportation which doesn't require a car to get around," said Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.

There are hearings scheduled for Sept. 10 and Sept. 24 for Charleston Water Taxi to have a non-exclusive agreement to use the new dock.
