Haley headed to Estill for 'Summer Challenge' party

ESTILL, S.C. (WCIV) -- Gov. Nikki Haley will be headed to rural Estill Elementary School on Saturday to celebrate a successful Scholastic Summer Challenge.

Scholastic named Haley a reading ambassador and donated 585 books to the school as part of the program. Each student was able to take home a book, reports the governor's office.

"Growing up in the small town of Bamberg, reading was incredibly important to me. Books inspired me to dream, to think about things that didn't happen in Bamberg," said Haley.  "That is why I am proud to have joined with Scholastic to help deliver 585 books to Estill Elementary School, one for every student to take home. Reading is not only essential to getting a good education but plays a role in leading a full and happy life – something all parents want for their children."

The reading challenge was designed to help children combat reading losses that happen during summer months when school is not in session.

The challenge ends on Sept. 6, but students have already logged 143 million minutes of reading across the nation. The top 20 schools with the most minutes read will be featured in an upcoming book.
