Kayaker drowns in Savannah River near Ga.-SC line

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a 61-year-old man has died in a weekend kayaking accident on the Savannah River in the Augusta area.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials say the body of Ralph Taylor of Augusta was recovered from the river around 9:30 a.m. Sunday by members of the Richmond County Water Rescue dive team.

Cpl. Ben Payne of DNR's Law Enforcement Division said Taylor and two companions launched their kayaks in the river Saturday afternoon below Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

Taylor became separated from his companions, who were experienced kayakers and had decided to paddle the South Carolina side of an island to take advantage of more challenging rapids. The Augusta Chronicle reports that Taylor paddled toward the Georgia side of the island, where he is believed to have drowned.
