2 die in crash after speeding away from trooper

Posted: Updated:

LATTA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a wreck that killed two people in Latta happened after the car sped away from police.

Investigators said the driver 39-year-old Charles Page and passenger 20-year-old Jonathan Vereen died after their speeding car went out-of-control and slammed into a tree Saturday night on state Highway 917 near Latta. A third person in the car was injured.

Dillon County deputies say the car sped away after a trooper turned on his blue lights getting ready to stop the vehicle.

Investigators are trying to figure out why the men didn't stop.
