Haley selects chief of staff as Corrections chief

Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has selected her chief of staff to be the next director of the state's prison system.

Haley on Thursday named Bryan Stirling to lead the state Corrections Department.

Stirling has been Haley's chief of staff for about a year. The 43-year-old has previously worked as a deputy attorney general and as an attorney in private practice.

Haley says she picked Stirling in part for his leadership in response to the massive hacking of the Department of Revenue last year. Stirling says he will work toward making people productive members of society when they leave South Carolina's prisons.

Stirling takes over Oct. 1 for Bill Byars, who is retiring after years in public service, including stints at Corrections and the Department of Juvenile Justice.
