Letter shows Daniel Island weighing relationship with Berkeley County

Posted: Updated:

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A letter to Daniel Island residents shows the island board is considering a move -- from Berkeley County to Charleston County.

According to the letter, the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association met with the property owners association to determine whether Berkeley County was representing the island's interests. Now the neighborhood association has called a meeting on Sept. 12 to answer questions from residents.

The meeting will be led by the legal team the two associations used to consider the island's options.

"It is my hope that by giving you enough advanced notice, you will invite your friends and neighbors who may not be members of DINA yet, as this is an island wide residential issue," DINA President Dave Williams' letter to residents read.

According to a report from the Post and Courier, residents are upset at Berkeley County's school board after island residents voted to pass a school referendum with the understanding a new school would be built on Daniel Island.

However, district plans do not yet include that school.

"There are many issues and points to consider as we evaluate our relationship with Berkeley County. I hope that by attending, you will share your opinions, gain an understanding of all the issues we are facing, and help us take the next step together," Williams continued.

The meeting had initially been scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Bishop England auditorium, but was moved to a second location. However, it has not been moved back to the Bishop England Auditorium.

People are urged to arrive at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 12. Organizers anticipate the meeting will only take an hour.

"I think this will be a very defining moment for the residents and future of Daniel Island, and I hope you will join us," Williams wrote.
