More South Carolinians using seat belts

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - More South Carolinians are using seat belts.

A new study from the National highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that seat belt usage in South Carolina increased from 86% in South Carolina in 2011 to 90% last year.

South Carolina's seat belt usage rate was 70% in 2005, the year that South Carolina enacted a tougher seat belt usage law.

Officials credit South Carolina's better seat belt usage to education campaigns and enforcement of the tougher law.

The national average for seat belt usage was 86% last year.
