HANAHAN, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team shot the fourth-lowest round in school history with a 1-over par 289 on the first day of play at the 11th annual Cougar Classic held on Sunday afternoon at Yeamans Hall Club.

The Cougars previously shot 289 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate in 2009-10 – five strokes shy of the school record of 284 set at the GSU/Pelican Preserve Invite in 2006-07. CofC's second-best round was a 287 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in 2010-11 and at the Cuthbert Cup in 2007-08.

Two newcomers fired a 1-under 71 in their collegiate debuts – freshman Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany), who is currently ranked No. 33 in the Women's Amateur World rankings, and freshman Vici Dreschler (Olching, Germany), who is competing in the tournament as an individual. Both are tied for 10th heading into tomorrow's second round. Fuenfstueck birdied holes 2, 9, 13, 14 and 18, while Dreschler made three birdies.

Sophomores Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.) and Mary Chandler Bryan (Chapin, S.C.) both shot even-par to help the Cougars to their current two-way tie for sixth place with No. 19 Baylor in the team standings. All four of the Cougar players birdied the final hole, a heavily-bunkered 460-yard par 5.

No. 30-ranked Mississippi State leads the 20-team field with a 6-under 282 followed by No. 20 South Carolina and No. 21 Clemson at 3-under (285) for a two-way tie for second. No. 25 NC State and Wake Forest round out the top 5 in a tie for fourth at 1-under (287).

NC State's Brittany Marchand and Mississippi State's Ally McDonald shot the lowest round of the day with a 6-under par 66 which ties the second-lowest round in the 11-year history of the Cougar Classic. They are both tied for the lead, while South Carolina's Samantha Swinehart made the lone hole-in-one of the tournament thus far on the par-3 No. 6.

"289 is the best round we've shot at the Cougar Classic in the history of our program, so that was a great round for us," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "We feel like we can be that good every round, and the next few days will show us if that's true. We played the back nine at 5-under today after turning at 6-over – and that ‘never-give-up' attitude is what I am looking for us to continue. That was a special nine for us, and hopefully, it will give us momentum going into the last two rounds."

The second round of play continues tomorrow with the first group set to tee off at 7:51 a.m. (ET). The Cougars will be paired again with LSU and Wake Forest with their first tee time set for 9:30 a.m. (ET).
