NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Charges for attempted murder were upgraded to murder Monday morning when a gunshot victim died, police said.

According to a police report, officers responded to Roper Hospital for reports of a patient who had been shot on Saturday. A witness told police she and the victim had gone to meet some friends when one of the friends threw a beer on the ground.

According to the report, that's when the suspect, 55-year-old Vaughn Louis Hilliard, came around the corner of a trailer and began fighting with the victim because he thought the victim was the person who had thrown the beer.

The witness told police the victim threw Hilliard to the ground in the altercation. She said Hilliard left, came back with a rifle and shot the victim in his left side.

ABCNews4 also spoke with an eyewitness who said she took cover when she saw it happen.

"It was so loud that I got on the ground," Lateisha Brown said.

Brown said Vaughn had exhibited similar behavior prior to the incident.

"I've seen him come out of his gate and threaten to shoot people before but it never been done until now," she said.

Vaughn, who was initially charged with attempted murder, is now charged with murder since the victim died at Medical University Hospital early Monday morning.

He is also charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He was given a $50,000 bond for that charge on Sunday but bond will likely be denied for the murder charge.

The coroner's office identified the victim as Troy Cason, 46, of North Charleston. He died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen at 12:44 a.m. Monday.

His widow Rhonda Cason expressed concern over the manner in which her husband died.

"All I want to know is why did he kill him. For what reason did he kill him? He was no bad guy. He was no bad person. I don't understand why he killed him. I want justice to be done," she said.

She said he was a good father to their children.

A judge denied Hilliard bond Monday.
