Marley Lion suspect takes plea deal

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One of the men charged in the shooting death of 17-year-old Marley Lion accepted a plea deal last week.

Julius Brown, who was charged with obstruction of justice, murder and attempted armed robbery, accepted a plea agreement on Sept. 4 that dropped his murder charge to manslaughter.

According to a report from The Post and Courier, the deal could mean almost no jail time for Brown if he provides information on the other defendants in the case. ABC News 4 has asked for a comment from Brown's attorney on the plea agreement.

While the details of the plea agreement have not been made public, Brown has been placed under a protective order.

Brown was originally considered a witness, but detectives later learned he was acting as a lookout for Ryan Deleston, Brian Rivers and George Brown.

SPECIAL SECTION: The Marley Lion Case

In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 16, 2012, officers found Lion on the ground outside his SUV in the Famous Joe's parking lot. He had been shot.

Surveillance video showed what appeared to be an armed robbery involving four men.

Lion died at Medical University Hospital.

On the day Lion would have turned 18, Charleston police announced the arrest of four suspects in the murder investigation.

This marks the second time that Brown has bypassed a murder charge. In 2004, he was charged with the murder of Atiyaa Manley, but the charge was later dismissed after the only witness died.
