New attendance lines don’t sit well with many parents

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) — How school leaders plan to address overcrowding east of the Cooper doesn't seem to sit well with a lot of parents.

Moultrie District 2 on Wednesday night unveiled the new attendance lines for its elementary and middle schools at Wando High.  Parents eyed them very carefully. Traci Smith, one of the many parents in attendance, says she didn't like what she saw.

The new lines have her 9-year-old son attending a new school.

"He got tears in his eyes because all of his friends are at Pinckney and are all on the side that's going to stay at Cario. He's going to lose all his friends," said Smith.

No parent ABC News 4 spoke to at the Wando High meeting supported the new attendance lines.

"I feel like it's not fair," said Bing Pan, a father to two children.

Pan said he moved to Ivey Hall with his two children based on the schools he knew they would attend under the current zoning.

"Now the younger one would go to Jennie Moore instead of Laurel Hill. The older one would go to Laing Middle," said Pan. "We are thinking about moving to a different place, sell the house maybe."

Nearly 13,000 students attend the more than dozen schools in District 2 and school leaders say that's 1,000 students too many.

"Not anything is set in stone but this is about the best choice we've had for a while," said board chairwoman Marty Belk.

Belk said a final decision would likely be made next month. With the district growing an average of 350 students per year, Belk said this seems to be the only feasible option.

"Everybody is not going to be happy. There's no way. We've tried so hard and we know that," said Belk.

But if you ask some parents, they say that's still not good enough.

"It should have been thought out before it got to this point," said Smith.

Belk said the new lines would go into effect in the fall of 2015 and students would be required to provide proof of residency.
